is in effect for most parts of the bay area with possible record-breaking lows tonight. this is a live look from our mount s to ro camera. >> it is so cold out there people are packing on the layers or just packing it in to get away from the freezing weather. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm carolyn johnson. meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking the cold right now and has a look at live doppler 7hd. sandhya? >> yeah, it is teeth-chattering cold. let's look at the temperatures and we will see how much colder it is going to get. it is already 25 dries in novato and 26 in napa. santa rosa 28, fairfield 27. the numbers are at or below
freezing in many parts of the bay area, and they are still going down fast. livermore 33 degrees. freeze warning covers the bay area except san francisco until tomorrow morning at 9:00. increased risk of hypothermia. we will be seeing record-breaking low temperatures tomorrow. live doppler 7hd is tracking it. and we will be tracking possibly some snow here locally. i'll be back with all of the temperatures for tomorrow and the snow potential in a few minutes. carolyn? >> thank you. we will have team coverage on this cold snap. let's start with alan wang live in pleasanton where the temperature is in the 30s. alan? >> yes, carolyn. it is legal to burn firewood in the bay area and we are smelling the chimneys puffing smoke. we are also watching the temperature drop closer to freezing. right now it is 37 degrees out when heated pool water collides with cold air you get steam.
when your water polo coach makes you get out for goofing off, you get an effective disciplinary tool. >> every once in awhile if they act up and not doing what they are supposed to be doing we pull them out of the water and they get quiet really quickly. >> it feels like ice is on the bought to -- bottom of my feet. my lips are purple. >> the temperature dipped to 43 degrees around 6:30. the fans at this nearby soccer tournament were equiped with plenty of blankets, but the players had to find other means. >> cuddle up with the bench players, the ones on the bench. >> did you guys cuddle? >> i wouldn't mind it. >> the cold weather was bad for patio seating in downtown livermore where it was 38 degrees at 8:30. but it was great for this pet store where thermal underwear for dogs was selling as well as the self-heated pet beds. >> instead of using electricity it has a foam that retains the heat of the animal and reflects it back to it. >> the freeze warning has been
a great motivator to buy, sell and behave. abc7 news. >> our cold snap coverage continues with heather ishimaru in san jose where temperatures and records stood for 41 years could be shattered over the next fiewr hours. heather? >> this may be a little confusing. this stuff in my hair is snow that they were making here at christmas in the park. i walked under the snow making machine about two minutes ago and if there is anything still left that's an indication of how cold it is. two hours ago or so when we first got here the snow would not have saved my hair. it is cold. how cold will it get? that's what everyone is wondering. will it break a record tonight? >> the holiday spirit warmed hearts at this tree lighting fundraiser hosted by action day primary plus schools and daycare. carol fritas and her husband founded it in 1968. she remembers the last record low in san jose, 29 degrees on
december 5th, 1972. >> ♪ the day i will always remember ♪ >> when the temptations "papa was a rolling stone" topped the charts and the 49ers were playing their first full season at candlestick. >> that was the same year my daughter was born. >> what do you remember about it? >> well, we lost a lot of fruit trees. we had fruit trees just starting here and the frost killed them. we had to start again. it was freezing cold. >> katie wood missed the cold snap of 1972. she moved here in 1974. it has been cold enough to know that she needs to spend tonight at her daughter's place. >> because i live in a mobile home and they do get cold very fast. >> over at christmas in the park, most people came prepared. but if not this vendor was ready to help. >> we have scarves and beanies and santa hats. we do have gloves.
>> do the antlers help keep people warm? >> they give you magical powers to stay warm. >> for now the cold is an excuse to pull out the head gear and the cozy jackets. cross your fingers the power doesn't go out like back in 1972. >> a new baby and our power went out so we had to keep her warm like the pioneers by the fireplace. >> better get that firewood ready just in case. heather ishimaru, abc7 news. >> and it is frosty in the north bay as well. that's where abc7 news anchor ama dates is live for us. ama? >> carolyn, i think we all need some of the magical antlers that heather was talking about. for us in the bay area, this is cold. but i met some people with a very positive outlook today. a couple of people said at least it is not raining. others say the cold weather helps them get into the holiday spirit. >> these feathered friends keep a close watch over the evening commute.
today's cold weather caught some people off guard. >> i walked out this morning not nearly equiped and then i went back inside and ruffled through my ski bag and got my ski gloves. it was a rude awakening. >> adam is not phased. >> i heard it is supposed to drop into the 20s. being from wisconsin, it is just another fall day it feels like. >> i hope oden is tough because i don't think he is getting a sweater from santa. there is no jacket for this jogger who thinks it is a perfect night. >> i expect you to maybe bewaring running pants and the cold weather gear, but not really. >> a smarter man would be. just get out as quickly as you can and put whatever you can on and get it done. >> not everyone was so brave. they put on their outerwear to pick out the perfect christmas tree. >> it definitely feels colder. we have been unusually warm. nocially it gets -- normally it gets colder than this, but today it is cold. >> the bielmans came prepared

october and early november. police say she gave the teller a note at both banks saying she has a gun. she is 25 to 30 years old and 5 foot 7 to 5 foot 8 and 140 to 170 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair. >> on the peninsula, police in hillsboro are warning people about a jump in mail theft, but it is a rn whatting we can all benefit from no matter where you live. a property tax check was recently stolen out of a curbside mailbox. to avoid becoming a victim of check fraud or identity theft of any kind police suggest we use big, blue post office boxes on the side of the street. especially when sending bills. don't put them in your mailbox at your home. caught on camera, fremont police hope you will recognize this man and help capture him. detectives posted this on youtube. it shows him rumaging through a drawer during a home break in. police have not revealed what was taken. the theft happened inside a home about 12:30 on saturday
afternoon. they got this really quality surveillance tape. a possible kidnapping was caught on ac transit surveillance video. an ac transit driver pulled up to a bus stop in mill pea dislast night. a woman appeared to be trying to board the bus when a man pulled her away and toward the back of a nearby business. the bus driver called 9-1-1, but by the time police arrived both people were gone. developing news. workers plan to work off the job at fast-food outlets across the bay and across the country. it is the latest in a series of protests. they are urging fast-food restaurants to pay their workers $15 an hour. rallies will take place at lunchtime tomorrow at some locations at mcdonalds in vallejo and antioch. millions of accounts hacked. next on abc7 news, if you use facebook, twitter or other popular social media sites you may booy a victim and not even

potentially deadly cargo have turned up after a massive search across mexico. the truck carried a container of cobalt 60 radio active material used in cancer treatments. two armed men seized the truck as it headed toward a nuclear storage facility. police think the robbers wanted the vehicle and didn't know what the cargo was. they say cobalt 60 can be used to make dirty bombs. a new tribute in memory of paul walker, the actor killed in a fiery car accident over the weekend. >> ♪ tell the world i'm coming home ♪ ♪ i'm coming home >> the video was posted on the "fast and furious" youtube channel and shows a montage of the role that made him a star in 2001. universal pictures halted production of the seventh film in the series. the studio says it is assessing all options to move forward with the franchise. one couple will remember paul
walker for his generousity. kyle had just returned from his army deployment from iraq and wanted to buy his wife the perfect ring before he was deployed again. when the couple left the store without a ring, walker who happened to be in the store at the time anonymously bought it for them. the couple only found out it was walker when the jeweler shared the story after his death. >> a massive security breech and hackers stole user names and pass words for about two million social media and e-mail accounts. the thefts began in october. hackers have seized log-in information for facebook, twitter, yahoo!, youtube and other sites. researchers tracked it to a server in the netherlands. so far there is no evidence the hackers have actually accessed any of the accounts. last night we told you about the person who is leaving uh astonishingly large tips at restaurants. it has been happening for weeks now. it is all chronicled on an instagram page. somebody is sitting a the a table at harris' steak house, exfrom, left a $1500 tip last

san rafael a record at 30, 38 in san francisco and getting really two degrees below the previous record. oakland is expected to tie at 35 and livermore and san jose pretty cold there. but it is not cold enough for records. gilroy is expected to hit 24 degrees. you can see a lot of those records were set in 1972. the roof camera is showing you the view. pretty calm here. san francisco at 43. 38 in oakland. a little breeze holding your temperature up above freezing by 2 degrees. redwood city, los gatos, half moon bay, 36 degrees. you can see it is clear in the financial district. check out the temperatures. we are looking at 28 in santa rosa and 26 in napa. the current temperature in chicago is 38 degrees. we are running much colder than what they are dealing with right now. 27 in fairfield and 33 in livermore. here is what the windchill factor plays into things and this is what it really feels
like. a little breeze and fairfield is feeling like 20 degrees. 21 in napa. we are talking windchill here. 25 in novato. the view from the so tro tower camera as we look toward a sparkling san francisco night. freeze rn whattings in effect for all areas except san francisco. record lows are likely in the morning. chilly in the afternoon. really that continues for friday as well with a wintry mix on friday afternoon and going into saturday morning. we will be talking about low snow levels tomorrow morning 19 in napa as i mentioned and 21 in santa rosa. it will be icy cold in some parts of the bay area. 26 concord and 30 san jose and 32 palo alto and half moon bay. you will need all of your heavy, thick winter clothes, 24 degrees in fairfield and 25 in livermore. as you look here, the cold air mass is settling right over us. this will likely be the coldest night of the next seven days and then this disturbance drops south and this is coming in from western canada. look what it is bringing with it. it will bring rain.
light rain showered, but not until the latter part of the morning around cloverdale. it comes to the north bay by 10:00 a.m. could see a rain-snow mix to the north, and then by 5:00 p.m. the evening rush hour is on the wet side. beyond that, quickly clearing early saturday. snow levels 1500 to 3,000 feet locally. in the sierra nevada low snow levels and the travel is rough. winter storm watch friday afternoon to saturday afternoon. check out the snow totals. 12 to 24 inches and down to the thousand feet we will see accumulating snow. tomorrow afternoon, upper 40s to low 50s. chilly but sunny. the accu-weather seven-day forecast, widespread freeze and then get ready for more chilly weather into the weekend. the good news is monday through wednesday next week it is milder daytime and nighttime. >> thank you very much. >> let's move on to sports now. >> colin kaepernick is brief and jim harbaugh inexplicable. >> that about does it. a little history here. what does abraham lincoln have
